Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, the United States, Britain, Greece, and Australia to witness the reality of disaster capitalism. He discovers how companies such as G4S, Serco, and Halliburton cash in on organized misery in a hidden world of privatized detention centers, militarized private security, aid profiteering, and destructive mining.

Disaster has become big business. Talking to immigrants stuck in limbo in Britain or visiting immigration centers in America, Loewenstein maps the secret networks formed to help corporations bleed what profits they can from economic crisis. He debates with Western contractors in Afghanistan, meets the locals in post-earthquake Haiti, and in Greece finds a country at the mercy of vulture profiteers. In Papua New Guinea, he sees a local community forced to rebel against predatory resource companies and NGOs.

What emerges through Loewenstein’s reporting is a dark history of multinational corporations that, with the aid of media and political elites, have grown more powerful than national governments. In the twenty-first century, the vulnerable have become the world’s most valuable commodity. Disaster Capitalism is published by Verso in 2015 and in paperback in January 2017.

Profits_of_doom_cover_350Vulture capitalism has seen the corporation become more powerful than the state, and yet its work is often done by stealth, supported by political and media elites. The result is privatised wars and outsourced detention centres, mining companies pillaging precious land in developing countries and struggling nations invaded by NGOs and the corporate dollar. Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea and across Australia to witness the reality of this largely hidden world of privatised detention centres, outsourced aid, destructive resource wars and militarized private security. Who is involved and why? Can it be stopped? What are the alternatives in a globalised world? Profits of Doom, published in 2013 and released in an updated edition in 2014, challenges the fundamentals of our unsustainable way of life and the money-making imperatives driving it. It is released in an updated edition in 2014.
forgodssakecover Four Australian thinkers come together to ask and answer the big questions, such as: What is the nature of the universe? Doesn't religion cause most of the conflict in the world? And Where do we find hope?   We are introduced to different belief systems – Judaism, Christianity, Islam – and to the argument that atheism, like organised religion, has its own compelling logic. And we gain insight into the life events that led each author to their current position.   Jane Caro flirted briefly with spiritual belief, inspired by 19th century literary heroines such as Elizabeth Gaskell and the Bronte sisters. Antony Loewenstein is proudly culturally, yet unconventionally, Jewish. Simon Smart is firmly and resolutely a Christian, but one who has had some of his most profound spiritual moments while surfing. Rachel Woodlock grew up in the alternative embrace of Baha'i belief but became entranced by its older parent religion, Islam.   Provocative, informative and passionately argued, For God's Sakepublished in 2013, encourages us to accept religious differences, but to also challenge more vigorously the beliefs that create discord.
After Zionism, published in 2012 and 2013 with co-editor Ahmed Moor, brings together some of the world s leading thinkers on the Middle East question to dissect the century-long conflict between Zionism and the Palestinians, and to explore possible forms of a one-state solution. Time has run out for the two-state solution because of the unending and permanent Jewish colonization of Palestinian land. Although deep mistrust exists on both sides of the conflict, growing numbers of Palestinians and Israelis, Jews and Arabs are working together to forge a different, unified future. Progressive and realist ideas are at last gaining a foothold in the discourse, while those influenced by the colonial era have been discredited or abandoned. Whatever the political solution may be, Palestinian and Israeli lives are intertwined, enmeshed, irrevocably. This daring and timely collection includes essays by Omar Barghouti, Jonathan Cook, Joseph Dana, Jeremiah Haber, Jeff Halper, Ghada Karmi, Antony Loewenstein, Saree Makdisi, John Mearsheimer, Ahmed Moor, Ilan Pappe, Sara Roy and Phil Weiss.
The 2008 financial crisis opened the door for a bold, progressive social movement. But despite widespread revulsion at economic inequity and political opportunism, after the crash very little has changed. Has the Left failed? What agenda should progressives pursue? And what alternatives do they dare to imagine? Left Turn, published by Melbourne University Press in 2012 and co-edited with Jeff Sparrow, is aimed at the many Australians disillusioned with the political process. It includes passionate and challenging contributions by a diverse range of writers, thinkers and politicians, from Larissa Berendht and Christos Tsiolkas to Guy Rundle and Lee Rhiannon. These essays offer perspectives largely excluded from the mainstream. They offer possibilities for resistance and for a renewed struggle for change.
The Blogging Revolution, released by Melbourne University Press in 2008, is a colourful and revelatory account of bloggers around the globe why live and write under repressive regimes - many of them risking their lives in doing so. Antony Loewenstein's travels take him to private parties in Iran and Egypt, internet cafes in Saudi Arabia and Damascus, to the homes of Cuban dissidents and into newspaper offices in Beijing, where he discovers the ways in which the internet is threatening the ruld of governments. Through first-hand investigations, he reveals the complicity of Western multinationals in assisting the restriction of information in these countries and how bloggers are leading the charge for change. The blogging revolution is a superb examination about the nature of repression in the twenty-first century and the power of brave individuals to overcome it. It was released in an updated edition in 2011, post the Arab revolutions, and an updated Indian print version in 2011.
The best-selling book on the Israel/Palestine conflict, My Israel Question - on Jewish identity, the Zionist lobby, reporting from Palestine and future Middle East directions - was released by Melbourne University Press in 2006. A new, updated edition was released in 2007 (and reprinted again in 2008). The book was short-listed for the 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Award. Another fully updated, third edition was published in 2009. It was released in all e-book formats in 2011. An updated and translated edition was published in Arabic in 2012.

Since when does harbouring 15 million Arabs amount to a crime? This article is from 2003, has there been reference to it since? As for Dershowitz, he counds like he's seriosuly losing it. You gotta know you're on shaky ground when you are on arguing with IAF pilots.

  • Antony Loewenstein

It's the Onion, a joke, though for many, any Arab is a potential threat. Sound familiar? As for Dershowitz, he's a fraud and happy to share dinners with Ariel Sharon, so his position is pretty clear.

  • Shabadoo

We are of course talking about the destruction of Fallujah that took place when the mullahs and the crackpots turned into Taliban-town, right? The only thing the Yanks did wrong there was not roll in first thing and give those nutters a chance to dig in.

  • Antony Loewenstein

The killing of hundreds, maybe thousands, of civilians is clearly irrelevant, because they're Arabs?Dabadick, your ability to justify war crimes would be hilarious if it weren't so clueless.

  • orang

Anyone remember when Dershowitz visited Oz (a couple of years ago?)and was interviewed on Telly. He was spouting on about legalising torture (only the humane kind you understand) so that "we" (Israel already doing it, US about to be exposed for doing it, so let's legalise it so we can be on morally high ground) could get timely information in case of an imminent terror attack. The interviewer repeated to him what he was advocating in such withering fashion that the fuck was speechless. I thought it a good interview.

  • Antony Loewenstein

I do remember that interview.Dershowitz is still a big supporter of torture. The fact that evidence shows it's nearly always useless, let alone immoral, doesn't bother the esteemed Harvard prof.

not only were israelis evacuated but the head of palestinian military intelligence was killed in the blasts and at least one bomb was in the ceiling of the room where it exploded and for all those feeling theres not quite enough of a smell to this story alreday, youre old mate abu musab al-zarqawi was responsible, well of course he wasor one of his most trusted leutenants,(never had to spell that word before, sure its wrong)

  • Ibrahamav

Seems antony is taking to posting nonsense. Doesn't seem to be anything about fink's complaint. What exactly what fink whining about? And what exactly is antony whining about? That his parents took away an "h"?

  • Human

Yeah Israeli's dissapeared right before the attacks in NY, the London Tube bombings and now this. If ya want to protect yourself abroad just stay where the Isrealis stay. Orang – Can you provide a link or 2 on the head of Pal. Intell info?Peace.

  • Antony Loewenstein

Human, Correction, Israelis/Jews did not disappear before 9/11 or the London bombings. Urban myth.Jordan is a different case altogether.

  • Human

Antony – It was widely reported on all the MSM networks that Minister Netanyau(hope I spelled it right)cancelled a movement because of a threat and that the threat was passed on to Brit. Intell. On 911 – I will dig up the links if you like. I do remember the company that was in operation at 1 of the bldgs. in NY. Urban Moving Systems. This outfit along with other mover companies and "Israeli Art Students" have either been shut down or the spies arrested and deported. I had provided the links before on a previous thread(when dabadick asked for them).Let me make myself clear. Mossad controls COMM in the USA and therefore can 'listen in" 'data mine" and such. I do not believe they "did it'. I just believe that they knew something about it. In all 3 cases.

  • Poirot

Antony, I would like to know why you responded so respectfully to Human's clearly anti-semitic comments concerning the alleged ability of jews to vacate areas which subsequently become the targets of terrorist attacks. His implication was clearly that jews were in some way involved in perpetrating these attacks. I feel that had a right-winger made such a plainly racist and factually wrong comment, you would have responded much more witheringly.Best, AL

  • Ibrahamav

He responded respectfully because he is antisemitic in his own right. And since that is the group that he panders to, he must keep his bread butter-side up.

  • Human

poirot – Hardly factually wrong – London – <a href="http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/3489.asphttp://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/3489.asp<br />Massive Israeli spying on U.S. – <a href="http://207.44.245.159/article7545.htmhttp://207.44.245.159/article7545.htm<br />5 Israelis filmed 911 attacks – <a href="http://ww1.sundayherald.com/37707http://ww1.sundayherald.com/37707<br />http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=75266&contrassID=2&subContrassID=1&sbSubContrassID=0&listSrc=YCommunication workers forewarned – <a href="http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=77744&contrassID=/has%5Chttp://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jht… />Listening in – <a href="http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/12/18/224826.shtmlhttp://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/12/… />http://www.counterpunch.org/nimmo08252003.htmlhttp://www.netline.co.il/CAA.htmhttp://www.israelnewsagency.com/israelinternetspydefensearrests5540530.htmlhttp://www.cecaust.com.au/main.asp?sub=culture/jewish&id=p3/article22.htmAMDOCS – <a href="http://cryptome.org/verint-spysys.htmhttp://cryptome.org/verint-spysys.htm<br />For a history of AMDOCS control of Comm. worldwide just google "amdocs".AP 1st reported that the Israeli's knew something was up before the tube bombings. The report was passed on to various news sources. The Israeli Embassy later denied it.Antony responds respectfully because he is a gentlemen. I have responded respectfully even though you have labeled me an anti-semite. What I want to know is are you going to click on the links or are you like shab and think you carry the stone of truth in your pocket?I do now consider Israeli knowledge of the tube bombing up to debate. As for my other claims, they are pretty solid.Since I have not commed w/you before and you jump to labels let me inform you of my view on the Bloody Land – There is not one moral high ground anybody can lay claim to in the Bloody Land. The brutality upon the innocents both Jewish and Palestinian is immoral and just plain wrong. There are many forces on both sides who very being relies upon continuing the conflict. Until the Israeli and Palestinian people come to know that fact, all efforts at Peace will be futile.Peace.

  • Ibrahamav

Human, like Addamo, has been rightfully outted as an antisemite, so there really is no need to listen to his whine.

  • Wombat

Outed me? Never. You'll never take me alive.

  • Ibrahamav

Thank God. Who would want you alive? Certainly no sane person. Zundel would want you alive.

  • Wombat

Way to go ibraham. You just can't help spreading brotherly love can you?Maybe one day a secret report will be declassified that will give us the name of the failed lab experiment that produced you.

  • Antony Loewenstein

Ibrahamav, ever wondered if calling everybody an anti-semite might, just might, weaken your argument?Just a thought…

  • leftvegdrunk

Addamo, harsh but fair. And quite funny.

  • Ibrahamav

Antony, Ever wonder why most people believe you are an antisemite?Ever wonder why antisemites bring out that old canard "ever wondered if calling everybody an anti-semite might, just might, weaken your argument?"It's like that other stupid saying antisemites promote "All zionists consider all criticism of Israel to be antisemitism"It may work with the idiots you surrond your self with, but that's all.Don't tell me – some of your best friends are Jewish.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav said… "Antony, Ever wonder why most people believe you are an antisemite?"Ibrahamav, ever wonder why most people think you're an anti-semite who is trying to delegitimise the word so that neo-Nazis can get away with being anti-semites?

  • Wombat

Anyone keeping score of how many anti-semites on this list (according to Ibraham)?Hate to break it to you my friend, but yes, I have a number of close Jewish friends, one of whom's son happen to be a godfather. You poor soul. I'm guessing that you’re paranoia is the result of many factors beyond your control. Perhaps you were victimized as a child, or might it have been a traumatic forceps delivery at the hands of an obstetrician with acute Parkinson’s? Either way, your logic resembles that of a constantly evolving pretzel. On one hand you charge me with being antisemtic due to my lack of education, then when I provide evidence to the contrary, your mental back-flip suggests that quality of education is meaningless because Nazis were also highly educated.Perhaps it's time you had those fillings replaced.

  • leftvegdrunk

Oh for fuck's sake, Ibrahamav. Just piss off, you idiot.

  • Ibrahamav

So dirt joined the tag-teram idiots? Seemed he believes eddie and addamo, combined, are no match for Ibrahamav. Tough shit, I say.And as always, addamo provided nothing as evidence of his education. Surely you've had enough time with the 'buckling' quiz. Still no answer.

  • Wombat

Buckling quiz? I have no idea what you are referring to.I have no need to prove anything to you Ibraham, seeing as I haev been far more fothcomming about my credentials than you have. You have certainly not provided any evidence of your educational achievements, other than given us a large glimpse of a very disturbed childhood. I suspect you were one of those children at school who was, shall we say, considered "dufferent"?But you know what Ibraham, I would change a thing if I were you. As Hannibal Lecter said to Mason Verger, "I like you just the way you are".

  • Ibrahamav

You do have a need to prove something. No one really knows what it is but most don't give a shit about a nutcase such as you.You have been forthcoming with nothing but proof of idiocy (Since when is it a crime to harbor 15 million arabs?). Can't match you there.

  • Wombat

Another perfect non-argument Ibraham. You challenge the quality of my education .I provide examples of it, and you turn around and accuse me of needing to prove something. You are a true hit and run poster. You should be in law. Dershowitz could certainly use your help right now, seeing as he;s making such a joke of himself. But seriously, I rally do like you the way you are.

  • Ibrahamav

You’ve had way to much time to look it up on the Internet to find out the simple equation most with degrees in nuclear engineering have at their fingertips. Especially when dealing with thermal fission.

Had you answered the question at the time it was asked, right after you presented your (what can only be termed, now, as phony) credentials, you might have had a leg to stand on.

    But now you don’t.

  • Ibrahamav

You provided nothing. You couldn't answer a simple question that someone with your credentials would know. So the credentials must be fake.So I'm too busy laughing at your latest lie

  • Wombat

I'm glad I was able to ammuse you. It was intended that way.Ask me the question and I will answer it.And you provided even less BTW.

  • Wombat

You are talking in riddles Ibraham. What is the quesrion you are asking me? Ask the question and I will answer it.I have not practiced nuclear engineering in over 10 years, but go ahead and test me.You are such a basket case.

  • Ibrahamav

The question was asked when you presented your fake credentials. As stated before, you've had enough time to look up the answer on line so that even a drop out from his freshman year of college could understand the principles. You failed. Ta-ta.
