Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, the United States, Britain, Greece, and Australia to witness the reality of disaster capitalism. He discovers how companies such as G4S, Serco, and Halliburton cash in on organized misery in a hidden world of privatized detention centers, militarized private security, aid profiteering, and destructive mining.

Disaster has become big business. Talking to immigrants stuck in limbo in Britain or visiting immigration centers in America, Loewenstein maps the secret networks formed to help corporations bleed what profits they can from economic crisis. He debates with Western contractors in Afghanistan, meets the locals in post-earthquake Haiti, and in Greece finds a country at the mercy of vulture profiteers. In Papua New Guinea, he sees a local community forced to rebel against predatory resource companies and NGOs.

What emerges through Loewenstein’s reporting is a dark history of multinational corporations that, with the aid of media and political elites, have grown more powerful than national governments. In the twenty-first century, the vulnerable have become the world’s most valuable commodity. Disaster Capitalism is published by Verso in 2015 and in paperback in January 2017.

Profits_of_doom_cover_350Vulture capitalism has seen the corporation become more powerful than the state, and yet its work is often done by stealth, supported by political and media elites. The result is privatised wars and outsourced detention centres, mining companies pillaging precious land in developing countries and struggling nations invaded by NGOs and the corporate dollar. Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea and across Australia to witness the reality of this largely hidden world of privatised detention centres, outsourced aid, destructive resource wars and militarized private security. Who is involved and why? Can it be stopped? What are the alternatives in a globalised world? Profits of Doom, published in 2013 and released in an updated edition in 2014, challenges the fundamentals of our unsustainable way of life and the money-making imperatives driving it. It is released in an updated edition in 2014.
forgodssakecover Four Australian thinkers come together to ask and answer the big questions, such as: What is the nature of the universe? Doesn't religion cause most of the conflict in the world? And Where do we find hope?   We are introduced to different belief systems – Judaism, Christianity, Islam – and to the argument that atheism, like organised religion, has its own compelling logic. And we gain insight into the life events that led each author to their current position.   Jane Caro flirted briefly with spiritual belief, inspired by 19th century literary heroines such as Elizabeth Gaskell and the Bronte sisters. Antony Loewenstein is proudly culturally, yet unconventionally, Jewish. Simon Smart is firmly and resolutely a Christian, but one who has had some of his most profound spiritual moments while surfing. Rachel Woodlock grew up in the alternative embrace of Baha'i belief but became entranced by its older parent religion, Islam.   Provocative, informative and passionately argued, For God's Sakepublished in 2013, encourages us to accept religious differences, but to also challenge more vigorously the beliefs that create discord.
After Zionism, published in 2012 and 2013 with co-editor Ahmed Moor, brings together some of the world s leading thinkers on the Middle East question to dissect the century-long conflict between Zionism and the Palestinians, and to explore possible forms of a one-state solution. Time has run out for the two-state solution because of the unending and permanent Jewish colonization of Palestinian land. Although deep mistrust exists on both sides of the conflict, growing numbers of Palestinians and Israelis, Jews and Arabs are working together to forge a different, unified future. Progressive and realist ideas are at last gaining a foothold in the discourse, while those influenced by the colonial era have been discredited or abandoned. Whatever the political solution may be, Palestinian and Israeli lives are intertwined, enmeshed, irrevocably. This daring and timely collection includes essays by Omar Barghouti, Jonathan Cook, Joseph Dana, Jeremiah Haber, Jeff Halper, Ghada Karmi, Antony Loewenstein, Saree Makdisi, John Mearsheimer, Ahmed Moor, Ilan Pappe, Sara Roy and Phil Weiss.
The 2008 financial crisis opened the door for a bold, progressive social movement. But despite widespread revulsion at economic inequity and political opportunism, after the crash very little has changed. Has the Left failed? What agenda should progressives pursue? And what alternatives do they dare to imagine? Left Turn, published by Melbourne University Press in 2012 and co-edited with Jeff Sparrow, is aimed at the many Australians disillusioned with the political process. It includes passionate and challenging contributions by a diverse range of writers, thinkers and politicians, from Larissa Berendht and Christos Tsiolkas to Guy Rundle and Lee Rhiannon. These essays offer perspectives largely excluded from the mainstream. They offer possibilities for resistance and for a renewed struggle for change.
The Blogging Revolution, released by Melbourne University Press in 2008, is a colourful and revelatory account of bloggers around the globe why live and write under repressive regimes - many of them risking their lives in doing so. Antony Loewenstein's travels take him to private parties in Iran and Egypt, internet cafes in Saudi Arabia and Damascus, to the homes of Cuban dissidents and into newspaper offices in Beijing, where he discovers the ways in which the internet is threatening the ruld of governments. Through first-hand investigations, he reveals the complicity of Western multinationals in assisting the restriction of information in these countries and how bloggers are leading the charge for change. The blogging revolution is a superb examination about the nature of repression in the twenty-first century and the power of brave individuals to overcome it. It was released in an updated edition in 2011, post the Arab revolutions, and an updated Indian print version in 2011.
The best-selling book on the Israel/Palestine conflict, My Israel Question - on Jewish identity, the Zionist lobby, reporting from Palestine and future Middle East directions - was released by Melbourne University Press in 2006. A new, updated edition was released in 2007 (and reprinted again in 2008). The book was short-listed for the 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Award. Another fully updated, third edition was published in 2009. It was released in all e-book formats in 2011. An updated and translated edition was published in Arabic in 2012.

Bill me

Is Israel selling off parts of Mount Zion, specifically the area of Dovid HaMelek’s (King David’s) tomb and the location of the Diaspora Yeshiva (Jewish religious school) in Jerusalem to the Vatican?

Interesting…perhaps if things go completely tits-up, the Swiss Guard can keep David's Tomb safe from Palestinian desecrators (unlike what happened to Joseph's tomb)…

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

"the Swiss Guard can keep David's Tomb safe from Palestinian desecrators"Ah, but will they be able to keep Palestinian civilians safe too?BTW, I love the American Family Association. Constant source of amusement.

  • Shabadoo

Typical, al-Eddy … snark at the messenger, ignore the message of Muslim misbehaviour….

  • Ibrahamav

Don't worry, the swiss guards will have no problem protecting the palestinians from Jewish suicide bombers and Jewish terrorists attacking cars with pregnant women and their other 4 daughters. Swiss guards will prevent those Jewish freedom fighters from putting a bullet in each one of those little girls heads at point blank range. The Swiss will have absolutely no problem protecting the innocent palestinian people from Jews like that.I hope that addresses eddie's concern and that he can sleep easier now.

  • Wombat

I'm relived to hear that Ibraham, especially seeing a the rules at the staus quo is such that an IDF soldier can pump 17 rounds into a 13 year old Palestinian girl ignoring wrnings that the gilr was terrified) and get off with a minor charge. After all, why should an IDF solderi be admonished for perfroming what is considered standard practice. Here's the anti-smitic link to the anti-semitic article, written for the anti-semitic publication.http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,2763,1643573,00.html

  • Ibrahamav

17 rounds? Every time I read this it changes. The last story I read, the acquital of the soldier at trial, the father claimed 30 bullets.Of course, no bullets were pumped into a terrified 13 yr-old palestinian girl.A Palestinian was in an off-limits/ battle zone area, carrying a sack. When told to halt (From a considerable distance away) She tossed/dropped (depending on whose account is read) the sack and was shot. After some time went by, the officer in charge went to see what happened. In his rage and impotence he fired several shots with an automatic into a dead body. He didn't count them, he didn't strategically place them.Attempting to distort this story into a murder is just propaganda from some and antisemitism from others. Based on your previous posts, your attempt would be classified as antisemitic.Your attempt to equate this act to the deliberate murder of 4 little girls and their mother by palestinians claiming to be freedom fighters is another example of your antisemitic bent.

  • Ibrahamav

Here is the most unusual item in the story that our resident antisemite provided a link to:"The soldier, who has only been identified as "Captain R", was charged with relatively minor offences for the killing of Iman al-Hams who was shot 17 times as she ventured near an Israeli army post near Rafah refugee camp in Gaza a year ago."But she wasn't shot 17 times "as she ventured". In fact the rest of the story confirms she was riddled after she was already dead and lying on the ground. And the kicker? The officer is an Arab Muslim. And I don't believe the swiss guards can protect anyone from that kind of person.

  • Wombat

You are seriously losing it Ibraham."Of course, no bullets were pumped into a terrified 13 yr-old palestinian girl."and in the same post you say:"In his rage and impotence he fired several shots with an automatic into a dead body. He didn't count them, he didn't strategically place them."Kinda looks like you contradicted yourself buddy. Obvious signs of dimentia setting in.Quoting from the article, ,"It is still not known why the girl ventured into the area but witnesses described her as at least 100 yards from the military post which was in any case well protected."Was it not stated that this is standard IDF practice?Yes I'm sure there have been a lot of Jewish children killed by suicide bombers, and I am not excusing that. Similarly, there have been a great many Palesitinian children caught by so called "cross fire" and "stray bullets". For God's sake, similar incindents have even been caught on tape and you still deny it.Your delusion continues and as an obsessive appologist for the conduct of the IDF, your only defence is to lash out the only way you knwo how, crying anti-semitism.You are a discrace to your the values you pretend to uphold.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Shabadoo said… "snark at the messenger"Huh? I'm serious. The American Family Association really is funny. Puritanical Christianity is an eternal source of mirth (as long as it's kept at a safe distance … and out of the White House … oh crap.)"ignore the message of Muslim misbehaviour"Who's ignoring it? I read the article … somewhere there in all the dross was the 'misbehaviour' of which you spoke. Very naughty indeed. Given that so many Muslims decry such actions, I wonder why these particular Muslims did this. Maybe, just maybe, it had less to do with religion (note that some militants are secular, not religious) and more to do with, say, the hatred that comes from oppression. Wacky idea, I know. When will those Palestinians learn to love their oppressors like good Christians? Why can't they be more like Jesus and just lay down and die? Why do they insist on being like the Zealots of Masada, with all these futile attempts to reclaim their land and their dignity? Don't they know the legends – that the Zealots were crushed by their brutal oppressors?

  • Ibrahamav

No contradiction. No bullets were pumped until a time period had passed whereupon she was already dead. While you may be special, most other dead people are beyond being terrified. She was already dead. You made no point with the quote about witnesses. What were you trying to say?And exactly what has been capured on tape that I have denied? Are you talking about Dura? The 12 year-old trumpeted around the world as a victim of the Jews when it turned out that he was most likely killed by palestinians? That you are an antisemite is not a cry. Nor is the fact of your antisemitism a defense of anything. You are losing it. Get control and post when you can be coherent.

  • Ibrahamav

yes eddie, we wonder why the palestinians can not act as the defenders of masada instead of acting like nazis when they find a jew to kill.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav said… "Don't worry, the swiss guards will have no problem protecting the palestinians from Jewish suicide bombers and Jewish terrorists attacking cars with pregnant women and their other 4 daughters. Swiss guards will prevent those Jewish freedom fighters from putting a bullet in each one of those little girls heads at point blank range. The Swiss will have absolutely no problem protecting the innocent palestinian people from Jews like that."I was thinking more along the lines of the Israeli Attack Force's slightly more lethal missiles, tanks and helicopter gunships. You know – the ones they use to make more little terrorists with.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Addamo_01, you misunderstand Ibrahamav. When he says "no bullets were pumped into a terrified 13 yr-old palestinian girl", he is implying that there is no such entity as a "13 yr-old palestinian girl". They don't exist. There are only palestinian terrorists. You see, Palestinians have no gender and no age. They are the eternal evil spectres of terror. They CAN'T be killed really. Only their physical form can be temporarily stopped with bullets. But they return, over and over and over again. There are small breathing spaces of course, for Yhvh is not without mercy, but one must be eternally vigilant, eternally armed, and one must strike without hesitation, without trepidation, for to fail to do so is not merely to be lost, but is to loose the Divine Birthright That Is Zion.Right Ibrahamav?

  • Wombat

Ibrahamav said…"No contradiction. No bullets were pumped until a time period had passed whereupon she was already dead."Are you suggesting the girl dies of natural cuases? Where did you read that? And what's the purpose of emptying rounds into a dead body, if not to show complete disadain and disregard for the individual?"You made no point with the quote about witnesses. What were you trying to say?"That the defense that she was a suicide bomber doesn't hold water because the IDF soldiers were a safe distance at the time."The 12 year-old trumpeted around the world as a victim of the Jews when it turned out that he was most likely killed by palestinians?"Yes, but I was led to believe that the Palistinian stray bullet theory was a re herrign and disproved."That you are an antisemite is not a cry."It's your standard reponse to any debate regarding Israel, especially when you are clutching at straws to provide a facutal argument. Face it Ibraham, there are no anti-semites on this list and you know it; otherwise you wouldn't frequent it.If you were man enough to go head to head with real anti-semites and holocaust deniers, you would slugging it out on David Dukes forum.Yo knwo you are safe here because you are among eductaed people who give a damn.

  • Ibrahamav

Was addamo dropped on his head, several times, after birth? She was shot. She died. After she was dead, the Arab Muslim officer approched her body, several yards from whence she was shot at, and then pumped her dead, unterrified, body with several shots, witnesses ranging the number from 17 to 30, as it was an automatic rifle. No one claimed she was a suicide bomber, just that her bag may have contained explosives. You are an antisemite. That mind set leads you to lie about the simplist things. Especially if you can try to make Jews look bad.On the otherhand, eddie is just a moron who enjoys trying to bait Jews. Nothing antisemitic about that.

  • Wombat

You have some genetic blindspot Ibraham. She was shot yes. Who shot the girl? And what did this lover of humanity have to say abot the incident after it happened?"Israeli army officer who fired the entire magazine of his automatic rifle into a 13-year-old Palestinian girl and then said he would have done the same even if she had been three years old"Amd I lying by quoting a news item? And you may have also missed the part about "a tape recording in which the captain is warned that she was just a child who was "scared to death""I am not raising this article to make jews look bad you imbecile. It's abotu the actions of an IDF Captain. I raised it to balance your skewed perception that only Palestinians do bad things. If I'm a liar, then so is the reporter that wrote this piece and the paper that puclished it.You hipocritically carry on about babies being killed by terrorists, but this soldier said that he woud think nothing of doing what he did to a 3 year old. You don't find that repugnant?

  • Ibrahamav

You mean "Arab muslim, who, as an officer in the Israeli army,…" Don't you?Was there a three yaer old in the area? Or was he just talking without actually thinking, as you are often guilty of.I find your antisemitism repugnant. You hold on to it because of a deranged mind, not a heat of the moment statement.Too bad you don't know the difference. You are doing it to make jews bad, if not, you wouldn't "link 17 bullets pumped into" with "terrified 13 year old girl" when you are absolutely certain that the girl was already dead before the arab used his rifle to pump an entire clip of amunition in automatic fire mode.

  • Wombat

I have not found any reference to this IDF soldier being Arab Muslim, not that it makes any difference. Jew or Arab, why was he found innocent of wrongdoing? Was the IDF soldier not acting under orders? Is not 'confirming the kill' standard practive for the IDF? Why does it take 17 bullets to confirm a kill? An automatic weapon does not make you "shoot Iman twice in the head, walk away, turn back and fire a stream of bullets into her body."And as Dr Mohammed al-Hams, who inspected the child's body at Rafah hospital, confirmed "She has at least 17 bullets in several parts of the body, all along the chest, hands, arms, legs,"Automatic rifles at close range doesn't spray bullets over such a wide area unless the gunman is having an epileptic seizure. This was a hate fuelled killing. You want so much to pretend that I am creating this story out of whole cloth, when it is there in black and white for "all to see" as you would say. All I am doing is quoting what was reported. Your hollow outrage, and compulsive need to utter the word "antisemitism" is just an attempt on your part to divert attention from a hineous crime. An act you know is indefensible, but are ashamed to admit. If what I am quoting is innacurate or has been dispriven, point me to a reputable source that refutes this story.Only a blind applogist would suggest that pointing to a news report is and attempt to make Jews look bad. For the umpteenth time, this has nothig to do with Jews; it's about the IDF. You are deliberately confusing matters to create a straw man, and use your only defense, antisemitism.

  • Ibrahamav

You poor poor thing. Antisemitism is not a defense, it is a label used to describe your outlook.Your poor attempts to libel Jews has nothing to do with the facts of the case.Automatic weapons fired in rage do not spray over an area, of say, 3 feet? You've never fired an automatic weapon, have you? Just as you know nothing of Reactor physics, you know nothing of the spray area of an automatic rifle. But you are so caught up in your attempt to make things look worse than they actually were, you're willing to lie about it.that's were your antisemitism has led you.So sad.

  • Wombat

Reactor Physics? Nice sidetrack that one. How do you know what I do or do not know about Reactor Physics?Any more dust you want to strow in the air and avoid being exposed as a sycophant for killers?Your pathetic effort to frame this as an issue abou Jews, vs what it;s realyl abotu, the IDF, is also falling flat. I stated that it was irrelevant who did the firing. What is relevant is that orders that were given.Your refusal (inability?)to again, provide any evidence to support your aargument, also betays you.Israeli automatic weapons are also regarded higly for their prescision, but spary has nothing to do with shooting a person in the head, turning your back, and shooting again. That is just bloodlust. Something you can probabyl associate with. How vile.

  • Ibrahamav

I know that you know nothing. You proved that when your phony credential were exposed.Evidence of what? All you've done is spew senseless assumptions. No automatic weapons are highly accurate, certainly not while they are being fired from a standing, unsupported, position.Bloodlust – shooting at a dead body? Anther stupid assumption from our resident antisemite, addamo.

  • Wombat

Yes bloodlust. She was dead all of few minutes. Her heart probably still beating. Nonethelss is was desecration of the corpse of a 13 year old girl. You predictably reacted to my bringing this story to the attention of the list, by muttering your favourite word. You are more than happy to dump on Arabs, Palestinians and Muslims from a great height at every opportunity, but you go into apoplectic shock when someone makes an unflattering comment about Israel. You keep rambling on about exposing my credientials. You insist I avoided answering a question that I never received. I looked thorugh all your posts (yes it was lile wading through pig manure) and could find nothing.Ask it again or ask me another question. I have not worked in the nuclear field for 10 years, but I'm happy to give it a try. I since oved to another field to move pursue my dream since then. You have not proved that the IDF soldier in qeustion was a muslim or otherwise either.Incidently, you have proven that you have well and truly lost the plot and completely contradicted yourself. In one post you said that Eddie was not an anti-semite (just a jew baiter) then in another you accuse him of an ant-semitic bent. You use the word so often, so carelessly and so you don't even remember who you used it on. And you wonder why your accusations are described as meaningless.Perhaps you should keep a diary. Under the name, remember to put Village Idiot.

  • Ibrahamav

She was dead but a few minutes but her heart was still beating? You have truly lost it.Not proved the officer was a muslim? he stated it himself in the article you provided. Didn't you read your own article? Are you so stupid that you link an article and don't read it???Is eddie a full fledged antisemitic nutcase or just a screwball with antisemitic leanings? Or, iaw addamo, must he be all or nothing? And does addamos opinion of this particular item matter? of course not.

  • Ibrahamav

The question regarding your lack of knowledge was right after your posting of your fake credentials. If you don't remember where you park your shit, it does not fall to me to find it for you.

  • Wombat

Druze are not considered Muslims, but Islamic. Nonetheless, I concede that point escaped me.My suggestion about the girl being dead and having a pulse was equally remiss, though I dount the IDF soldier got close enough to detemine if the girl was dead.My credientials are very real and your refusal to follow this up shows that you are a coward. I have nothing to hide, but you are like a frightened little boy Irbraham. For someone who runs from avoids answering direct questions like the the plague, it is lame of you to accuse others of the same. Eddie did say that you have the memory of a gnat, so it likely you can't even remember what it is you asked me.Funny that all of a sudden you have discovered nuance. How far one has to lean antisemitcally, before becomming one, I guess is compeltely up to you right?

  • Ibrahamav

You doubt the Officer got close enough? Based on what, your racism? Your bigotry? What is your assumption based on? Your hatred?Your cover has been blown, you are no more who you pretend to be then Arafat pretended to be a peace maker. You have everything to hide; Your lack of education, your antisemitism, your other racist tendencies. You were challanged and you lost. Poor you.

  • Wombat

Who get's close to a body they suspect of being a suicide bomber? It's called probability Ibraham. You will learn about that one day in high school.I have never come across an individual so filled with hate, paranoia and spite as you Ibraham. You must have suffered a tortured upbringing to end up the basket case that you are.No I didn't lose Ibraham. I'm one of the lucky ones. I could have turned out like you.

  • Antony Loewenstein

Ibra,You really do like to spew bile, don't you? Everything is a conspiracy against Jews, against Israel, against you.Does it hurt to think the whole world is against you? Oh, and how much do you LOVE talking about anti-semitism!

  • Ibrahamav

Funny how you didn't mention the bile spewed by eddie and addamo. What could that mean? Agenda?Tony, tony, tony… you are so predictable;)Addamo, you lost. Like a dinosaur, you're too stupid to realize it. maybe it will come to you next week.

  • Ibrahamav

Talk about a dinosaur losing his memory:Addamo_01 said… That the defense that she was a suicide bomber doesn't hold water because the IDF soldiers were a safe distance at the time.Thursday, November 17, 2005 2:01:55 AM Then, not even 10 hours later:Addamo_01 said… Who get's close to a body they suspect of being a suicide bomber? It's called probability Ibraham. You will learn about that one day in high school.Thursday, November 17, 2005 11:46:09 AM Poor addamo, he'll figure it out next week.

  • Wombat

Ibraham, you are like a stupid child at the playground who hits other children, then runs and hides behind his mother.Like most losers, you have an obsession with winning. Declaring yourself the winner when there is nothing to win epitomises futility.By all means, go right ahead.

  • Ibrahamav

Poor Addamo, Maybe he won't figure it out by next week.

  • Ibrahamav

No one ever claimed that antisemites were very smart. Addamo is proof of that.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Addamo_01, forget about it. You won the argument aaaaages ago.The only person who didn't notice was Ibrahamav – and you'll never convince him of that because he's got a mental defect.

  • Ibrahamav

BTW Ibrahamav, are you still trolling around on the Middle East Open Forum or did they kick you out for being so obnoxious?

    Loser said what?

    Thought so 😉

  • Edward Mariyani-Squire

Well did you get banned or not?

Didn’t you ‘win’ a poll of some kind for being the most offensive and obnoxious person on the whole forum … and for being a super-lurker with about 20 other identities? Do you recall all that?

Incidentally, now I know why your comments are so formulaic: you’re just cutting & pasting the same old comments you’ve made in other forums. Basically, you seem to only have about five statements in your entire brain. They seem to be:

    1. You’re an antisemite. [I know I’ll be called an antisemite for saying this, I think we’ve all come to love this particular Ibrahamav classic chart-topper.]
    2. There will be peace when the palestinians love their children more than they hate jews.
    3. There is no persecution of palestinians by Israel.
    4. Arabs/Muslims are corrupt/backward/evil (and antisemites).
    5. The UN should treat Israel with respect; if not, then Israel does and should ignore it.

Everything else is either (a) just a re-wording of one of these five lines, or (b) is a combination of two or more of them.

E.g. Here’s a standard Ibrahamav rave which I constructed simply by taking (in this order) 3, 2, 4 and 1:

[3] There is no persecution of palestinians by Israel. The palestinians persecute themselves with their suicide bombings. [2] If they really wanted peace they’d love their children more than they hate jews – [4] which is sadly impossible because they’re arabs. [1] The fact that you question these truths proves you’re an antisemite.

See how easy it is to be a cardboard cut-out of you? Just cut around the dotted lines which say “religiously bigoted racist” and there you go!

  • Ibrahamav

They allow you sissors where you are? I must write the Board about that.
