[...] The allegations were primarily against Macquarie University’s Andrew Vincent and ANU’s Amin Saikal. Vincent was accused of inviting extremists to speak at his Centre for Middle East and North African Studies (of which I’m a board member) including mainly “anti-Zionists” such as Tanya Reinhart and Robert Fisk. Both events generated huge interest and turn-out, and Fisk attracted the largest crowd ever seen at Macquarie. [...]

[...] In late 2005, I was appointed to Macquarie University’s Centre for Middle East and North African Studies. We organised the Robert Fisk lecture in early 2006, the largest event ever held on campus. We are currently planning a conference in early December, titled “The Journalist and Islam: competing agendas, political correctness and the war on terror.” A mixture of local and international journalists, academics and business figures will debate the most pressing issues of the early 21st century.
[...] Robert Fisk was in Sydney last week and lectured on the responsibility of journalists in times of war. I’ve now been informed that around 1500 people attended the event, with hundreds being turned away. This week’s Australian Jewish News editorialises on his speech and is very creative with the truth: [...]

The Fisk lecture was excellent. I saw him in Canberra, where the room was full beyond capacity with people. Again, the range of types of people present was quite large. There is obviously a great thirst for knowledge and independent voices on goings on in the Middle East.

"After securing Fisk, I never expected that such a rich diversity of people would come and hear the world’s foremost Middle East correspondent."

That's because it didn't happen, but I'm sure that a diversity of people came to gawk at Fisk. They would have come to gawk at haswari. And Arafat.
