In the mid '80's I promised myself that I'd try and get back to India every seven years following three trips. Ok so it hasn't happened, but should it soon I will look for the same young incredible beggar stationed outside a spot in Calcutta vivid in my memory. Should I hope he's still there or graduated to some benevolent post-dharma existence courtesy of the economic miracle? Johnny Howard would see buggar all of this reality from his five star stopovers. Still a great place and still a promise.

Deng was a great leader and the chinese are going to be thanking him for a long time to come.
"It doesn't matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches the mouse."
While it is undeniable that poverty still exists in China and India hundreds of millions in China have had a dramatic improvement in their economic circumstances. To have seen this while living in China over the last 17 years has been incredible. Practical ideas solving everyday problems.
Remember - hundreds of millions have benefitted. If the masses in India similarly benefit why would you stop this happening?

What was the rate of child malnutrition previously. What was the statistics in all areas discussed by the article in previous years?

Perhaps nothing has changed at all except the perception of India becoming a world power.

We have too quickly forgotten that "Small is beautiful." In this, as in many other matters, Howard is sadly blinded by ideology. He sees only what he wants to see, or is told to see.
