Sense is spoken

Sir Jonathan Sacks is Chief Rabbi of Britain. He discusses with Ziauddin Sardar the challenges facing religion in the 21st century, argues too much emphasis is given to the Holocaust, Greater Israel must be abandoned, and the possibility of negotiating peace with Hamas.

Sacks is sometimes prone to hyperbole, but these recent statements suggest an ability to see beyond Zionist dogma.

  • “Religion does not do power very well,” he [Sacks] says. “The Bible is terribly sceptical of political power.” Hence there is always a danger of “politicised religion”. Just look what happened in former Yugoslavia; look at what is happening in Iraq now.

Yeah, and at least two other Middle Eastern countries with names starting with the letter “I”.
