[...] Unlike some recent dishonest attempts by the Murdoch press to slam more critical voices on the Middle East, today’s piece at least attempts to present a variety of perspectives. It should not be forgotten, however, that the journalist of the story, Cameron Stewart, returned from a Zionist-paid trip to Israel earlier in the year and yelped like an over-excited school boy after spending time around Israeli military hardware.
[...] Melbourne writer Antony Loewenstein let fly after being described as an “anti-Zionist blogger” in an article by Rebecca Weisser in The Australian’s Higher Education Supplement that questioned his appointment to the board of Macquarie University’s Centre for Middle East and North African Studies. “Have these people no respect for a best-selling author?” Loewenstein wrote in an angry blog entry attacking Weisser and other “Zionist clowns”. Possibly, but Loewenstein’s only published work, My Israel Question, has so far sold 5987 copies, according to Bookscan. [...]

That sounds like a great plan Viva,

Any chance such a discussion could take place without anti-Semitism or Blood Libel being mentioned?

As I said on this blog a while ago, we really need to open this debate up to non-Jewish voices. It does affect us all, after all.

Excellent post. It highlights what is so obvious to anyone who cares to examine the media with anything approaching a critical eye: The accusations of bias are invariably a protest that an arab perspective has been given air time. To even admit that there is a view other than the official Israeli view is deemed to be bias. It reflects so badly upon them but still they persist.

In what must be the understatement of the century, Downer, in his inimitable way said, while speaking at the dedication of Ohel Devorah in Melbourne:

"And the IDF can be a bit aggressive in defence of Israel.
Well that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody who has a bit of sensitivity and a bit of understanding of what the Israeli people and the Jewish people are up against in Israel and it’s particularly important to keep a historical perspective of that. "

I am not sure who else has seen this given that the speech does not appear on Mr Downer's website.

Not much one can add to this, it is self evident really. Rubenstein had a piece in the Sydney Morning Herald this week which at a glance seemed to be a defence of multiculturalism. A closer look revealed it to be an exposition of multiculturalism's failures, which were, surprise, surprise, letting in those nasty Muslims, who are all extremists, etc. Yawn! It could so easily have been about multiculturalism's failures in letting in those nasty Jews, many of whom unquestioningly defend and financially support a regime that is a serial human rights abuser, that consistently thumbs its nose at the international community and the UN, has politicians that openly advocate ethnic cleansing - need I continue?
