This is how a Middle East “democracy” behaves:
Gaza City was plunged into darkness Sunday after Israel blocked the shipment of fuel that powers its only electrical plant in retaliation for persistent rocket attacks by Gaza militants.
The Strip’s only power station is now closed and the UN has condemned the collective punishment.
Meanwhile, some Israeli ministers have called for the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Ever get the sense that the Israeli establishment doesn’t really understand that its position in the Middle East is becoming more tenuous by the day?
Ant, I heard about this first thing the other morning when I switched on the radio after a long spell away from the news. I was astonished at the brazen way in which this clear example of collective punishment was being carried out. I had a similar reaction today when I read about the Israeli military’s continued refusal to provide information about the ordinance it deployed in Lebanon. Deminers are risking lives to clear the area – all they want is data about where the bombs are. Such belligerence. And such impunity.
