Where are the Palestinian creatives?

Following the recent death of legendary Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish – beautifully eulogised here by Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery – a blogger in Gaza wonders what’s happened to the creative arts in the occupied territory:

We have to acknowledge that we have a problem here in our culture and way of thinking, and that the [Israeli] occupation has sown fear in us, to the point that we can not express ourselves through culture but have started destroying ourselves and reviling whatever is beautiful…What is the solution?

  • That’s right blame it upon those “dirty Jews”! Even at the height of the church ghetto imposed oppressions, Jews produced excellence in Talmudic scholarship. Of course Butt Head would not know anything about the Talmud – he’s a reform jew – enough said.
