Israel is not attempting to crush Hamas (which is impossible, as many people have pointed out). Israel is using Hamas as an excuse to mass murder Palestinians (just as Hezbollah is an excuse to mass murder Lebanese; and 'WMDs' is an excuse to get the Americans to mass murder Iraqis; and 'the nuclear threat' is an excuse to get the Americans to mass murder Iranians; etc.). The reproduction of Israeli political/military hegemony in the Middle East is a complementary motive. Given that Hamas (and Hezbollah) are both products of Israeli invasion and occupation, the only sure-fire way to get rid of Hamas (and Hezbollah) is for Israel to cease to exist in its present form. Hamas (and Hezbollah) is merely Israel in the mirror. Mass murder is yet another vehicle for the mass transfer of the indigenous Palestinian population and its offspring out of the Promised Land (and then some). Given that the Final Solution is politically impossible even for Israel, given carte blanche by the Western powers to do anything short of it, the final solution against the Palestinians is a slower process than the gangster Israeli state would prefer. But, timing apart, the abject obeisance of all Western leaders to the hasbara (and associated emoluments like Hard Cash) is ensuring that everything is running to plan.
