Antony Loewenstein's travels take him to private parties in Iran and Egypt, internet cafes in Saudi Arabia and Damascus, to the homes of Cuban dissidents and into newspaper offices in Beijing, where he discovers the ways in which the internet is threatening the ruld of governments. Through first-hand investigations, he reveals the complicity of Western multinationals in assisting the restriction of information in these countries and how bloggers are leading the charge for change. The blogging revolution is a superb examination about the nature of repression in the twenty-first century and the power of brave individuals to overcome it. It was released in an updated edition in 2011, post the Arab revolutions, and an updated Indian print version in 2011.
The best-selling book on the Israel/Palestine conflict, My Israel Question - on Jewish identity, the Zionist lobby, reporting from Palestine and future Middle East directions - was released by Melbourne University Press in 2006. A new, updated edition was released in 2007 (and reprinted again in 2008). The book was short-listed for the 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Award. Another fully updated, third edition was published in 2009. It was released in all e-book formats in 2011. An updated and translated edition was published in Arabic in 2012.

Enemies here, enemies everywhere

The Third Jihad is “a groundbreaking film [that] exposes the truth and reveals what the media is not telling you about the Jihadist quest to rule America”:

This kind of film comes around pretty regularly these days. This is how it works. A bunch of neo-cons find a Muslim to denounce the “radicals” within their religion. The US is portrayed as a nation sleep-walking into tragedy. Not all Muslims are terrorists, we’re told, and yet many Muslims support “terrorism”. The serious-sounding Muslim commentator warns viewers that the “threat” from radical Islam is real and the very fabric of Western democracy is under threat.

In “The Third Jihad”, we’re initially told that only a small percentage of Muslims are “radicals”, then a few minutes later warned that “most” of America’s Muslim leadership supports extreme policies.

Islamist terrorism is a threat, of this there is no doubt. But such fear-mongering only provides ammunition for the usual suspects.

Co-opted Muslims should really think more carefully about with whom they work. The “anti-radical Islam industry” is always hungry for new Muslims to share their bile (and support yet another war against “terrorism” in the Arab world.)

    The sins of Harold Pinter

    Harold Pinter died just before Christmas and would therefore not find it easy to respond to the obituary in the Jewish News last week. But at least he fared better than fellow writer Kurt Vonnegut, who died in 2007 and received a similar mauling on Fox News just the day after he died, and for similar reasons. He was a trenchant critic of his government’s actions in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Central America, as were many other American writers.

    Vonnegut, wrote James Rosen on Fox News, pursued a unique brand of “despondent Leftism” and became “rich and irrelevant by the late 1970s”. A thorough Google search failed to reveal whether Kurt Vonnegut had any attitude to the Middle East at all.

    Pinter was everything Vonnegut was, and more. One, he was Jewish, which Vonnegut was not. Two, he was critical of Israel’s handling of the Palestinian problem. Three, because of points one and two, he fits neatly into the category of Jews sometimes described as “self-haters”, “closet antisemites” and even “apologists for Hamas”.

    One of his crowning sins was to divorce his first wife and wed Lady Antonia Fraser. This was marrying out, and with a vengeance. Not just any gentile woman, but a titled aristocrat.

    Pinter’s distinctive contribution to the stage was recognized with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005. The Nobel Prize gave Pinter a global platform which he seized enthusiastically to denounce U.S. President George W. Bush and then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

    "The invasion of Iraq was a bandit act, an act of blatant state terrorism, demonstrating absolute contempt for the concept of international law," Pinter said in his Nobel lecture, which he recorded rather than traveling to Stockholm.

    He was also deeply critical of Israel’s policies regarding the Palestinians, saying that “Israel’s injustice to the Palestinians is an outrage.” This attitude did not endear him to those on the Israeli and Jewish Right, who could have swallowed Pinter’s “anti-Americanism”, but not his criticism of Israel. Great playwright he may have been, but he was also a sinner of the first rank. Yes, a “self-hater”, and it took the Australian Jewish News to spot it.
