Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, the United States, Britain, Greece, and Australia to witness the reality of disaster capitalism. He discovers how companies such as G4S, Serco, and Halliburton cash in on organized misery in a hidden world of privatized detention centers, militarized private security, aid profiteering, and destructive mining.

Disaster has become big business. Talking to immigrants stuck in limbo in Britain or visiting immigration centers in America, Loewenstein maps the secret networks formed to help corporations bleed what profits they can from economic crisis. He debates with Western contractors in Afghanistan, meets the locals in post-earthquake Haiti, and in Greece finds a country at the mercy of vulture profiteers. In Papua New Guinea, he sees a local community forced to rebel against predatory resource companies and NGOs.

What emerges through Loewenstein’s reporting is a dark history of multinational corporations that, with the aid of media and political elites, have grown more powerful than national governments. In the twenty-first century, the vulnerable have become the world’s most valuable commodity. Disaster Capitalism is published by Verso in 2015 and in paperback in January 2017.

Profits_of_doom_cover_350Vulture capitalism has seen the corporation become more powerful than the state, and yet its work is often done by stealth, supported by political and media elites. The result is privatised wars and outsourced detention centres, mining companies pillaging precious land in developing countries and struggling nations invaded by NGOs and the corporate dollar. Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea and across Australia to witness the reality of this largely hidden world of privatised detention centres, outsourced aid, destructive resource wars and militarized private security. Who is involved and why? Can it be stopped? What are the alternatives in a globalised world? Profits of Doom, published in 2013 and released in an updated edition in 2014, challenges the fundamentals of our unsustainable way of life and the money-making imperatives driving it. It is released in an updated edition in 2014.
forgodssakecover Four Australian thinkers come together to ask and answer the big questions, such as: What is the nature of the universe? Doesn't religion cause most of the conflict in the world? And Where do we find hope?   We are introduced to different belief systems – Judaism, Christianity, Islam – and to the argument that atheism, like organised religion, has its own compelling logic. And we gain insight into the life events that led each author to their current position.   Jane Caro flirted briefly with spiritual belief, inspired by 19th century literary heroines such as Elizabeth Gaskell and the Bronte sisters. Antony Loewenstein is proudly culturally, yet unconventionally, Jewish. Simon Smart is firmly and resolutely a Christian, but one who has had some of his most profound spiritual moments while surfing. Rachel Woodlock grew up in the alternative embrace of Baha'i belief but became entranced by its older parent religion, Islam.   Provocative, informative and passionately argued, For God's Sakepublished in 2013, encourages us to accept religious differences, but to also challenge more vigorously the beliefs that create discord.
After Zionism, published in 2012 and 2013 with co-editor Ahmed Moor, brings together some of the world s leading thinkers on the Middle East question to dissect the century-long conflict between Zionism and the Palestinians, and to explore possible forms of a one-state solution. Time has run out for the two-state solution because of the unending and permanent Jewish colonization of Palestinian land. Although deep mistrust exists on both sides of the conflict, growing numbers of Palestinians and Israelis, Jews and Arabs are working together to forge a different, unified future. Progressive and realist ideas are at last gaining a foothold in the discourse, while those influenced by the colonial era have been discredited or abandoned. Whatever the political solution may be, Palestinian and Israeli lives are intertwined, enmeshed, irrevocably. This daring and timely collection includes essays by Omar Barghouti, Jonathan Cook, Joseph Dana, Jeremiah Haber, Jeff Halper, Ghada Karmi, Antony Loewenstein, Saree Makdisi, John Mearsheimer, Ahmed Moor, Ilan Pappe, Sara Roy and Phil Weiss.
The 2008 financial crisis opened the door for a bold, progressive social movement. But despite widespread revulsion at economic inequity and political opportunism, after the crash very little has changed. Has the Left failed? What agenda should progressives pursue? And what alternatives do they dare to imagine? Left Turn, published by Melbourne University Press in 2012 and co-edited with Jeff Sparrow, is aimed at the many Australians disillusioned with the political process. It includes passionate and challenging contributions by a diverse range of writers, thinkers and politicians, from Larissa Berendht and Christos Tsiolkas to Guy Rundle and Lee Rhiannon. These essays offer perspectives largely excluded from the mainstream. They offer possibilities for resistance and for a renewed struggle for change.
The Blogging Revolution, released by Melbourne University Press in 2008, is a colourful and revelatory account of bloggers around the globe why live and write under repressive regimes - many of them risking their lives in doing so. Antony Loewenstein's travels take him to private parties in Iran and Egypt, internet cafes in Saudi Arabia and Damascus, to the homes of Cuban dissidents and into newspaper offices in Beijing, where he discovers the ways in which the internet is threatening the ruld of governments. Through first-hand investigations, he reveals the complicity of Western multinationals in assisting the restriction of information in these countries and how bloggers are leading the charge for change. The blogging revolution is a superb examination about the nature of repression in the twenty-first century and the power of brave individuals to overcome it. It was released in an updated edition in 2011, post the Arab revolutions, and an updated Indian print version in 2011.
The best-selling book on the Israel/Palestine conflict, My Israel Question - on Jewish identity, the Zionist lobby, reporting from Palestine and future Middle East directions - was released by Melbourne University Press in 2006. A new, updated edition was released in 2007 (and reprinted again in 2008). The book was short-listed for the 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Award. Another fully updated, third edition was published in 2009. It was released in all e-book formats in 2011. An updated and translated edition was published in Arabic in 2012.

“Your mother may be a Jew but you no longer are one”

Following the feature in yesterday’s Jakarta Post about my work and critical Judaism, I received the following email from Charles Solnik (a former IDF physician):

I don’t know how you can be proud to be a Jew. The foundation of Jewishness is the Torah. That is even if one is secular or not their knowledge that they are a Jew is derived from the fact that Jews over 3500 years maintained an adherence to the biblical format.

That means even your ancestors kept the Torah. They crossed the dead sea they fought with Joshua (and conquered the land) up to Bar Kochba to keep the land.

They all believed that the land of Israel was given to them in a covenant with G-d. They died for it and were persecuted for it for the last two thousand Years. Many preferred death than conversion.

So I don’t know what it is that makes you proud to be a Jew and support Israel’s enemies. I imagine it must be very attention getting and profitable to pretend to be a proud Jew and promote the destruction of Israel. The expert is Richard Goldstone the self proclaimed lover of Israel. How much did he get paid now and in the future for his report?

I am a Jew who fought for Israel and I know very well the nature of the conflict. I know the huge extent we go to reduce collateral damage. I know the pain of losing comrades and burying them. I know how Israel yearns for peace but our neighbors seek our destruction.

Your mother may be a Jew but you no longer are one.

Charles Solnik

This is all Old Testament fictional horseshit.

That AL gets this shit all the time only highlights how zionism has fucked otherwise healthy minds.

And of course the ethnically cleansed and dead Palestinians don't exist.

All this for a G-d (what fucking bullshit) that doesn't exist. There is NO God.

so where does that leave us? Zionism as a secular project.

You are no longer a Jew? WHo is a Jew?

I keep coming back to the Spinoza story. Spinoza, the principled Jew who said, sorry, my integrity is worth more  than your pathetic tribalism.

One of the more sober and astute (coupled with a sense of humour, clearly of Jewish parentage) commenters on the British Jews Sans Frontieres blog is a person who goes under the moniker Mooser.

This is vintage Mooser from the 25th November:

" Let me see if I have this straight. If you only marry people of your own religion for a certain number of years you win a free country, and are exempted from the laws of humanity and civilisation?

    If only I had known!"

So Solnik's concept of an exclusive Jewish community is that of those who 'are exempted from the laws of humanity and civilisation'.

Truly this is a sinking ship.

You must be the most disowned Jew in the land. Not for any religious transgressions, mind you, but because you criticize the nation state of Israel. That's religious?

Do you have to do TAFE course or something to qualify as a denouncer, or is something that is inherited? It would be a handy qualification to have, don't you think?  🙂

"I don’t know how you can be proud to be a Jew. The foundation of Jewishness is the Torah."

Theodor Hertzel thought the Torah was a pile of shite – albeit a political useful pile. So the progenitor of Israel couldn't have been a proud Jew. Thus those who follow Hertzel's vision – Zionists like Charlie Solnik can't be a proud Jew … or at least his brain should be torn asunder by the contradiction, which is what seems to have happened.

"That means even your ancestors kept the Torah. They crossed the dead sea they fought with Joshua (and conquered the land) up to Bar Kochba to keep the land."

What? Even before the Torah was actually written down? Ah yes, that's right: the mythical "oral" Torah. How crazy is that: not only does Charles believe the imaginary contents of the Torah, he also believes in an imaginary Torah itself. If you can pull that off and still get a job (in the army), then you can believe any completely insanely false thing at all … even while you're doing to very opposite; such as: "I know the huge extent we go to reduce collateral damage."

They all believed that the land of Israel was given to them in a covenant with G-d.

Didn't they also come to believe that their subsequent exile was punishment for becoming utterly immoral thereby breaking the covenant? Bah, details. Contracts can always be renegotiated … if the price is right.

They died for it and were persecuted for it for the last two thousand Years.

And now its payback time! Alas, the people who did the persecuting over the previous 2000 years are gone, so the Palestinians will have to be the substitute father-figure. Freud eat your heart out.

Actually, like everyone else, they were persecuted by rampaging armies periodically not because god make a covenant with them (hell – no one else believed in the validity of the covenant), but because in the period of "great empires", indisciminately rampaging armies were the way of the world. (So much has changed.) And the only reason "persecution" didn't translate into "annilation" was because in the Muslim empires, the Jews were treated as human beings.

    Many preferred death than conversion.

    But most didn't.

So I don’t know what it is that makes you proud to be a Jew and support Israel’s enemies.

How about moral integrity? Why is no-one suprised that such a bizarre and unfamiliar notion does not spring Charlie's mind? Not in the vocab.

I imagine it must be very attention getting and profitable to pretend to be a proud Jew and promote the destruction of Israel.

Not as profitable as being an IDF doctor. One can get a whole country for one's trouble.

How much did he [Goldstone] get paid now and in the future for his report?

Interesting logic here. If you defend Israel, you should get paid. If you criticise Israel, you should do it for free.

I am a Jew who fought for Israel and I know very well the nature of the conflict.

And that line explains, dear reader, why you felt that chill when reading this. If you were a Palestinian child, would you want to meet this IDF-trained, god-appointed delusionist in a dark ally?

Your mother may be a Jew but you no longer are one.

So much for respecting the Torah or the Talmud. Chucking them down the poop-chute is apparently perfectly acceptable if you don't like someone's views.

Judaism is the religion of the Hebrew people. However, it still remains a secular religion and who ever believes in the teachings and values of Judaism is free to practice it (At least I think). I personally believe the modern day jews, most of whom are European/Germanic and don't have a semitic bone in their body, don't really have the right to the land of Israel because of what some theological textbook says, but they have conquered the land just like the Palestinians before them had conquered it, so in that respect I personally believe the land is theirs. They are however a bunch of mass murderers and the only deviation between what Israel is doing and what Hitler did is that they have the international media by the balls and have created a concensus through manipulation. A perfect example are these gut-renching Hollywood movies about secular Arab terrorism and Jewish suffering (Munich) like the Jewish people were the only ones who have ever suffered. I also think faced with the true facts most of the Jewish people who support Israel wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. The "Jewish Lobby", for a lack of better term, is very good at using anti-semitism to mobilise the Jewish people in the advancement of it's agenda. By trying to silence honest people who have genuine concerns they are harbouring anti-semitism and it is unfair on the Jews who are genuinly good people, even if they're ignorant (about what their state is doing in their name).
