The role of public intellectuals in Western society is an interesting question, especially when so few individuals dare challenge “established truths”, preferring to suck on the drip-feed of media, government or business connections.
ABC Radio National broadcast in January the following event:
The literary magazine, Overland recently invited [in late 2008] two public intellectuals – Christos Tsiolkas and Antony Loewenstein – to discuss the consequences of saying unpopular things, something they are both quite familiar with. Christos is a well known Melbourne based author, whose latest novel, The Slap, is about the aftermath of a man hitting another person’s child at a barbeque.
Antony Loewenstein is a Sydney based journalist – he is best known as a Jewish critic of the actions of the Israeli government – expressed in his book – My Israel Question, and his blog http://antonyloewenstein.com

The Australian Jewish community has reacted with predictable anger to a couple of local Jewish academics who are calling for the dismantling of Zionism.
I had no personal involvement in the statement but I support an important debate over the future of Zionism and its detrimental effects.
I was interviewed by the Iranian satellite channel PressTV on the weekend about the issue:

If You Love This Planet is a weekly radio show broadcast around the world by famed activist and doctor Dr Helen Caldicott.
Recent guests include New York Times columnist Frank Rich and Times writer Bob Herbert.
Her latest interview:
Australian author Antony Loewenstein joins Dr. Caldicott on the program to discuss the delicate situation in the Middle East, and the volatile relationship between Israelis and Palestinians. His best selling book My Israel Question was published by Melbourne University Press in 2006. Loewenstein mentions the January 26 segment of CBS’s 60 Minutes program (“Is Peace Out of Reach?”) about the two-state issue.

The Podcast Network is a massive global community of citizens.
I was interviewed on Friday about the war in Gaza, the role of the US, the Zionist lobby and the ways in which the Western media obscures the truth about the Palestinians.
An interesting footnote:
With the help of my two assistants Tim Grainger and Jonathan Hewlett, we ran a LIVE TWITSTREAM of the interview through the gdayworld twitter account. We asked people to submit questions via Twitter during the interview and I fed those back to Antony during our call. It was my first attempt at podcast twinterviewing and the results were interesting.

G’day loyal visitors. Some work is taking place to fix an issue in single post layout.
Things may shift about from time to time throughout the day. Some sidebar content will vanish temporarily. Don’t panic! The nutters have not infiltrated the server.
Thank you for your patience.
