Yes, and I think that is why they don't want to see Hamas leading the fight for a free Palestine. I think they will settle for a Hamas being involved as long as they are subservient to Abbas and maintain a policy of politely asking the US/Israel if they wouldn't mind terribly if Israel would vouchsafe them some kind of 'state' "with aspects of sovereignty", as the Road Map puts it.

I beg to differ Michael. The Arab regimes see the population as their greatest foe and fear groups likes the Muslim Brotherhood because they represent the greatest challenge to their power. Fatah has no credibility whatsoever in the Arab world and by throwing their support behind them, the regimes only expose themselves to greater condemnation from their critics.

The Arab regimes are not so naive as to buy into the notion that Hamas can be excluded from Palestinian political life

I think this is exactly what the Arab regimes do buy into. They see the Islamists as their greatest foe. It's not that they want reconciliation between Hamas and Fateh, but for Hamas to be squeezed so hard in Gaza that they accept Abbas.

The question is will the the Arab regimes survive their continued barracking of a hopeless strategy in the OTs.
