Haaretz interview on the dangers of the Palestine lab and AI

The new film, Naza, by Israeli film-makers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, on Israel’s indiscriminate targeting and killing in Gaza, has caused a hysterical reaction in Israel (with people who mostly haven’t seen the film).

I was interviewed by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz about it:

Antony Loewenstein, a journalist and author of “The Palestine Laboratory,” agreed that accountability for Israeli abuses in Gaza was the only mechanism likely to ensure that other countries did not follow Israel’s model of leveraging AI to provide a framework to achieve military objectives that are prohibited under international law.

“If no one is putting Israeli intelligence officers or officials on trial, why would other countries not look to Israel as an inspiration?” Loewenstein, whose book argues that Israel has used the West Bank and Gaza as a proving ground for new military technology, said in an interview. “Otherwise you’ll see many, many other militaries deploying remarkably similar technology and using AI as a cover to do mass destruction.”
