Beyond Chutzpah

The Bushies continually outdo themselves with spectacular demonstrations of how disconnected from reality they are.…  A few weeks back, Laura Bush brought tears to our eyes when she informed us that none suffer like her and Dubya. …  Today, Condoleezza Rice came up with a whopper of a suggestion.…  She thinks that Washington should set up a tribunal in the murder of a Lebanese former premier under a chapter of the UN Charter which makes Security Council decisions mandatory.

Makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over doesn’t it?…  A year ago, they were scoffing at the bombing of Lebanon and the killing of over 1300 Lebanese civilians (with hardware and munitions they provided) as just growing pains, but all of a sudden, the murder of Rafik al-Hariri and 22 others in a bombing in Beirut in 2005 is of international importance.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Washington might seek to force the setting up of a tribunal in the murder of a Lebanese former premier under a chapter of the UN Charter which makes Security Council decisions mandatory.

“Absolutely. If we have to, we would push for setting up the tribunal under Chapter 7 because it is extremely important that the court is set up so that Lebanon goes back to normal,” Rice told Al Arabiya television in remarks aired on Monday.

Aside from the fact that the US has no authority to “force” the creation of any such tribunal in any country, can there be a more obvious example of a maneuver to increase the US’s geopolitical advantage?

You also have to take your hat off to this display of selective amnesia.…  Condi now wants to help Lebanon “going back to normal”, but she conveniently forgets that they would still be in a state of normalcy had it not been for the war of aggression by Israel, with support by the US and Britain against Hezbullah forces in Lebanon.

This has to go down alongside the clanger by Madeline Albright, when she described the deaths of half a million Iraqi children due to sanctions as “worth it”. Maybe Bush can chime in by suggesting that like the Iraqis, the people of Lebanon also owe the American people a debt of gratitude for having their neighbours dismembered?
