According to Ha’aretz, Abbas has demanded that the Israelis release Marwan Barghouti, arguably the last credible secular Palestinian leader left.
Such an idea, whether it actually happens or not, has huge ramifications for the dynamics of the Middle-East. There is a discussion of this issue here. This is, potentially, a huge development.
The other interesting development is… that the Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni wrote an article for the Arab language London-based newspaper, al-Sharq al-Awsat, calling for a united front by Israel, Fatah and, presumably, the USA, against Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran. Let’s see her try to sell that idea to the Palestinian people.
