Washington is extremely happy to be funding and arming an Egyptian elite that routinely tortures its own citizens and terror suspects sent from the US:
U.S. military aid to Egypt has been of “incalculable value,” helping its armed forces become a capable, professional body, the top U.S. military officer told Congress Wednesday.
Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the comments as he justified U.S. military assistance to allies at a congressional hearing focusing on efforts to cut costs.
“Changes to those relationships — in either aid or assistance — ought to be considered only with an abundance of caution and a thorough appreciation for the long view, rather than in the flush of public passion and the urgency to save a buck,” Mullen said.
