Rubbing Washington’s nose in it

The humiliation for Washington continues.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accepted an invitation to visit neighbouring Iraq, Iran’s foreign minister said on Sunday, a move that would be unlikely to be welcomed by the United States.

Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki said Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki had invited Ahmadinejad after Maliki visited Tehran on August 8-9, but added a final decision had yet to be taken.

Perhaps we can expect a retraction from Maliki, but given that this order has been released to the media, it looks like the puppet president the Bush Administration have chosen isn’t toeing the line anymore.

In the mean time, Maliki is due to visit Syria, who are also on Washington’s hit list.

Maliki and Petraeus have lost no love over the US forces arming the Sunni insurgents in Iraq. Perhaps Maliki no longer trusts the occupation forces to enable true reconciliation with the Sunnis and Baathists and is turning to Syria to assist this process. It is clear that the occupation are at a loss to achieve this themselves.
