The Guardian has reported that Dick Cheney is slowly convincing the hapless Bush into considering a military strike on Iran.
The shift follows an internal review involving the White House, the Pentagon and the state department over the last month. Although the Bush administration is in deep trouble over Iraq, it remains focused on Iran. A well-placed source in Washington said: “Bush is not going to leave office with Iran still in limbo.”
One has to wonder what, in the deep recesses of Cheney’s pathological mind, is actually driving this obsession and bloodlust.… … After all, in the past week, the IAEA, which has repeatedly stated there is no evidence that Iran is producing nuclear weapons, has struck an agreement (on top of Iran’s NPT obligations) to inspect even more of Iran’s nuclear power related facilities.
Furthermore, reports indicate that Iran is not actually the trouble maker in Iran it has been made out to be.
Meanwhile, with the surge in disarray, and General Pace suggesting that an even bigger surge may be on the cards,… the US Senate is taking a second look at the … Iraq Study Group report, which calls for dialogue with Iran and Syria in resolving the problems in Iraq.
Now, with the Bush administration’s own assessment showing limited progress in Iraq and an increasingly exasperated Congress once again debating the future of the war, a growing number of senators from both parties are making a new push to adopt the study group’s recommendations into law.
The disturbing reality is that, no matter what advice is forthcoming from the Senate, Bush will continue to ignore it, as well as the sentiment of 70% of the American public.… Like the Iraq war, if the US does attack Iran, it will be a war that will go down in history as being entirely unjustified and grossly immoral.
