Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, the United States, Britain, Greece, and Australia to witness the reality of disaster capitalism. He discovers how companies such as G4S, Serco, and Halliburton cash in on organized misery in a hidden world of privatized detention centers, militarized private security, aid profiteering, and destructive mining.

Disaster has become big business. Talking to immigrants stuck in limbo in Britain or visiting immigration centers in America, Loewenstein maps the secret networks formed to help corporations bleed what profits they can from economic crisis. He debates with Western contractors in Afghanistan, meets the locals in post-earthquake Haiti, and in Greece finds a country at the mercy of vulture profiteers. In Papua New Guinea, he sees a local community forced to rebel against predatory resource companies and NGOs.

What emerges through Loewenstein’s reporting is a dark history of multinational corporations that, with the aid of media and political elites, have grown more powerful than national governments. In the twenty-first century, the vulnerable have become the world’s most valuable commodity. Disaster Capitalism is published by Verso in 2015 and in paperback in January 2017.

Profits_of_doom_cover_350Vulture capitalism has seen the corporation become more powerful than the state, and yet its work is often done by stealth, supported by political and media elites. The result is privatised wars and outsourced detention centres, mining companies pillaging precious land in developing countries and struggling nations invaded by NGOs and the corporate dollar. Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea and across Australia to witness the reality of this largely hidden world of privatised detention centres, outsourced aid, destructive resource wars and militarized private security. Who is involved and why? Can it be stopped? What are the alternatives in a globalised world? Profits of Doom, published in 2013 and released in an updated edition in 2014, challenges the fundamentals of our unsustainable way of life and the money-making imperatives driving it. It is released in an updated edition in 2014.
forgodssakecover Four Australian thinkers come together to ask and answer the big questions, such as: What is the nature of the universe? Doesn't religion cause most of the conflict in the world? And Where do we find hope?   We are introduced to different belief systems – Judaism, Christianity, Islam – and to the argument that atheism, like organised religion, has its own compelling logic. And we gain insight into the life events that led each author to their current position.   Jane Caro flirted briefly with spiritual belief, inspired by 19th century literary heroines such as Elizabeth Gaskell and the Bronte sisters. Antony Loewenstein is proudly culturally, yet unconventionally, Jewish. Simon Smart is firmly and resolutely a Christian, but one who has had some of his most profound spiritual moments while surfing. Rachel Woodlock grew up in the alternative embrace of Baha'i belief but became entranced by its older parent religion, Islam.   Provocative, informative and passionately argued, For God's Sakepublished in 2013, encourages us to accept religious differences, but to also challenge more vigorously the beliefs that create discord.
After Zionism, published in 2012 and 2013 with co-editor Ahmed Moor, brings together some of the world s leading thinkers on the Middle East question to dissect the century-long conflict between Zionism and the Palestinians, and to explore possible forms of a one-state solution. Time has run out for the two-state solution because of the unending and permanent Jewish colonization of Palestinian land. Although deep mistrust exists on both sides of the conflict, growing numbers of Palestinians and Israelis, Jews and Arabs are working together to forge a different, unified future. Progressive and realist ideas are at last gaining a foothold in the discourse, while those influenced by the colonial era have been discredited or abandoned. Whatever the political solution may be, Palestinian and Israeli lives are intertwined, enmeshed, irrevocably. This daring and timely collection includes essays by Omar Barghouti, Jonathan Cook, Joseph Dana, Jeremiah Haber, Jeff Halper, Ghada Karmi, Antony Loewenstein, Saree Makdisi, John Mearsheimer, Ahmed Moor, Ilan Pappe, Sara Roy and Phil Weiss.
The 2008 financial crisis opened the door for a bold, progressive social movement. But despite widespread revulsion at economic inequity and political opportunism, after the crash very little has changed. Has the Left failed? What agenda should progressives pursue? And what alternatives do they dare to imagine? Left Turn, published by Melbourne University Press in 2012 and co-edited with Jeff Sparrow, is aimed at the many Australians disillusioned with the political process. It includes passionate and challenging contributions by a diverse range of writers, thinkers and politicians, from Larissa Berendht and Christos Tsiolkas to Guy Rundle and Lee Rhiannon. These essays offer perspectives largely excluded from the mainstream. They offer possibilities for resistance and for a renewed struggle for change.
The Blogging Revolution, released by Melbourne University Press in 2008, is a colourful and revelatory account of bloggers around the globe why live and write under repressive regimes - many of them risking their lives in doing so. Antony Loewenstein's travels take him to private parties in Iran and Egypt, internet cafes in Saudi Arabia and Damascus, to the homes of Cuban dissidents and into newspaper offices in Beijing, where he discovers the ways in which the internet is threatening the ruld of governments. Through first-hand investigations, he reveals the complicity of Western multinationals in assisting the restriction of information in these countries and how bloggers are leading the charge for change. The blogging revolution is a superb examination about the nature of repression in the twenty-first century and the power of brave individuals to overcome it. It was released in an updated edition in 2011, post the Arab revolutions, and an updated Indian print version in 2011.
The best-selling book on the Israel/Palestine conflict, My Israel Question - on Jewish identity, the Zionist lobby, reporting from Palestine and future Middle East directions - was released by Melbourne University Press in 2006. A new, updated edition was released in 2007 (and reprinted again in 2008). The book was short-listed for the 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Award. Another fully updated, third edition was published in 2009. It was released in all e-book formats in 2011. An updated and translated edition was published in Arabic in 2012.

The pro-life man

Noam Chomsky, Haaretz, November 10:

“…Elections are carefully contrived so that they are like selling toothpaste. In fact, they’re run by the same people who sell toothpaste. I mean when you turn on an ad on television, you don’t expect to get any information. You expect deception. That’s the point. Only economists talk about markets. Business can’t tolerate markets. They don’t want markets in which informed consumers make rational choices. What they want is deluded consumers who will make irrational choices. That’s what hundreds of billions of dollars in advertising are spent on. You don’t get any information about the product.”

A fascinating interview, read the whole piece.

Noam just now discovered this? And you think this bromide is fascinating? No wonder people think Noam is over rated. He should stick to his antisemitism. It appears that it is his forte.

  • Antony Loewenstein

Ah ibra, your cluelessness continues to amuse.look, an anti-semite under the bed. and look, another one, over there, everywhere. they're taking over. what you doing do?

  • Ibrahamav

And why did you come out from under the bed? Noam is a well known antisemite. He should stick with it rather then venture out into areas where he is pretty clueless, like you. This latest is old news.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav said… "Noam just now discovered this?"Hardly. Chomsky has been banging on about the nature of capitalism viewed by and large through a quasi-Marxist (probably better described as an 'intitutionalist' perspective) since the 1970s. And his assertions that the 'vision' of a web of interconnected competitive markets a la neoclassical (and Hayekian) economics is an idealist fantasy are not even necessarily 'eft wing' either! Look, for example, as Schumpeter (you don't get more right-wing that this) has to say in his justifiably famous chapter on Creative Destruction.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav said… "And why did you come out from under the bed? Noam is a well known antisemite."How so? He has never professed hatred of Jews as an ethnic group.

  • Wombat

Chomsky mentioned something interesting about the way free markets are perceived in the US vs Australia. Drug companies in the US wer complaining about restricrive regulations in Oz, on the grounds that we have laws against false advertising. The US drug companies are complaining that this limits their ability to market their product.I think that's pretty profound.

  • Ibrahamav

Eddie – Noam has never actually stated that he hates Jews? You have to be Hitler, the Mufti of Jerusalem, or Lincoln Rockwell before you can be label as antisemitic? What is profound about addamo is his ability to stop before he gets to the actual point. It appears that the drug company wanted a fair platying field, at least in the advertising arena.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav said… Eddie – Noam has never actually stated that he hates Jews? Please supply the quotes from Chomsky where he states that he hates Jews. If you can't, then you simply prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are a straight up-&-down liar, liar with your pants on fire. Mmmm – smell that smoke.

  • Wombat

Ibraham, your accusations of antisemitism are of no consequence to anyone, because you move the goalposts on the meaning like they were shopping trolleys. Noam is accused of antimsemitism by those who disagree with him, but are unable to refute him with reasoning. They say patriotism is the refuge of a scoundrel. Perhaps ther is an equivalent stament about antisemitism.

  • Ibrahamav

Eddie, supply the quotes that prove you actually read the reply to your previous asinine comment. If you can't, then you simply prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are a straight up-&-down idiot.Addamo – you just proved my accusations of antisemitism are of consequence to everyone, because the goalposts have never moved.

  • Wombat

Your disconect from reality seems to be widening by the day my friend. I am becomming concerned for you.You seem oblivious to how compulsively you use the term "everyone" in your posts. There appears to be a conviction that you speak for all the other people on this list, in spite of the fact that just about everyone disagrees with you. A minor detail I know. Picky picky. On the other hand, maybe you mean what you say, only that the "everyone" you are referring to are the imaginary friends you invented as a child. That would certainly explain a great deal your stiffled mental and emotional maturity.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav said… Eddie, supply the quotes that prove you actually read the reply to your previous asinine comment. To be anti-semitic you have to say or do anti-semitic things. Chomsky mainly just SAYS things, so let's focus on that. Now, I know in your book to be anti-semitic one merely has to say something – anything at all. I, however, am asking for something that a NORMAL human being could look at and say, "Yep, that's anti-semitic alright." Please supply the quotes from Chomsky that would achieve this result. BTW: I like my Ibrahamavic shorts 'medium', so could you not leave them on the barbecue for too long?

  • Ibrahamav

Disconnect from reality? Your friend? You are the one suffering from delusions. Cumpulsive use of the word "everyone"?Your very comments betray your sickness. But I don't care what you suffer.Perhaps now you can get back to the post instead of straying toward inane personal comments.

  • Pete's Blog

Anyway concerning Chomsky's non-semitic contributions to modern thought. They are vast.Much of what he says I disagree with eg what he said about US bombing causing Cambodians to kill Cambodians was crap. But his ability to raise the level of political and intellectual debate in the US is all too rare and should be cherished.

  • Wombat

i completely agree Gigolo, Chomsky has influenced so many people and opened their minds to the nature of the MSM. Yes, Ibraham, I agree, let's get back to the topic. So in reference to Edward's question, please supply the quotes from Chomsky that would prove he's antisemitic. If what you say has any validity, I'm sure we would all want to know and Chomsky's dark leanings.

  • Ibrahamav

In reference to eddies question, he did not ask for quotes proving Noam's antisemitism. And that has nothing to do with the article. My initial statement is that the entire story was on old ideas. Nothing new to contribute, and that Noam's forte, antisemitism, is more interesting than old economic theory. But neither are actually worth discussing.

  • Wombat

Agreed that the article itself does not have anythng to do with anti-semitism. Your reluctance, Ibraham, to be more specific to as to what proves Chomsky is an anti-semite, suggests your charge is based on second hand assumptions about him.By all means, indulge us with your case.

  • Ibrahamav

Eddie, my duty is fulfilled. You have been proven to have antisemitic leanings. All here now know. They may do what they wish with the knowledge.

  • Ibrahamav

My reluctance? Or eddie's lunacy? There is no need to answer a lunatics question. Indulge yourself.Perhaps if you'll reread eddie's asinine challange? And you still have proven and offered nothing in the way of credentials.

  • Wombat

Fine. Let's drop credentials, but unless you can provide quotes form Chomsky's works that prove is an anti-semite, your accusations are naught. As they say in Australia, put up or shut up.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav: if you have some statements by Chomsky showing that he is an anti-semite, don't you think it is your DUTY as a SUPPOSED fighter of anti-semitism to supply those quotes to everyone as quickly as you can.By refusing to do so, you merely further confirm the Theory that you are in fact an anti-semite because either (1) Chomsky is an anti-semite and you are protecting him by hiding his anti-semitic statements, or (2) you just hate Jews like Chomsky. Which type of anti-semite are you, Ibrahamav?

  • Ibrahamav

Addamo – let me repeat the prvious post since you find it so difficult to read on your own. Imagine this being spoken to you loudly and slowly so that you might understand it."In reference to eddies question, he did not ask for quotes proving Noam's antisemitism. And that has nothing to do with the article."

  • Wombat

As we suspected Eddie, Ibraham has nuttin. As often happens when you are losing an argument, you pretend there isn't.Now I indertsnad why you are incapable or reasoned argument – you have accute dislecia am I right? For your benefit, Eddie states, "DUTY as a SUPPOSED fighter of anti-semitism to supply those QUOTES to everyone as quickly as you can."And Ibraham, with your statement "All here now know", you again you pretend to speak to an audience that hasn't collectively concluded that you're a pathological idiot.

  • Ibrahamav

Addamo, as you haven't the wit nor education to suspect, your deduction is meaningless. And the last thing a fighter of antisemitism requires is an antisemite trying to tell him his duty.LMAO. As if anything you've concluded actually has any meaning.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Ibrahamav said… "Eddie, my duty is fulfilled. You have been proven to have antisemitic leanings."What? Your duty is fulfilled by "exposing" little ol' me as having anti-semitic LEANINGS (g~d, not even a fully fledged anti-semite, apparently), while simultaneously letting that giant fish Noam Chomsky completely off the hook? Where are your priorities? We're talking NOAM BLOODY CHOMSKY here! Don't fail us now, O Nazi Hunter! Please O please, bring us the quotes of that demon-spawn that we may finally smite him and hail to the heavens the glorious virtues of Saint* Ibrahamav, Guardian of the Quotes!* Honourary saint. May be revoked at any time. Batteries not included.

  • Wombat

You are obviosuly getting quite desperate Ibraham. Nowhere to turn you poor dear? What is so difficult about answering Edwards challenge? Are you worried you may not be up to it? One would have thought that with your mouthy, superficially precocious and ultimately childish ramblings, that you would have at least somethign up your sleeve. As Edward said, we're all counting on you to disect Chomsky before our very eyes.

  • Ibrahamav

Edward has trouble counting his toes. Funny how addamo apes eddie. Could they be the same?So eddie has changed his tune? He no longer asks the original question? The stupid question wherein he was blown out of the water? And addamo, whose credentials were exposed is his backup?

  • Ibrahamav

Results 1 – 10 of about 17,000 for chomsky antisemite. (0.18 seconds) Results 1 – 10 of about 23,000 for chomsky antisemitic. (0.21 seconds) Results 1 – 10 of about 79,900 for chomsky hates Jews. (0.24 seconds)Do your own reading. Come to whatever screwed up conclution you wish to. I'm not here to educate you, just expose you.And that has been done.

  • Danny Yee

There are 16 million results for "illegal occupation of the west bank", are you suggesting that proves something?

  • Wombat

Nice one Danny,You just exposed this fraud and liar.Only Ibraham, who demnds evidence from others, would use Google to support his own arguments. A person who substitutes mindless and immature stubbornness for any rational thought. The only thing that exposed is what a waste of time it is trying to hold a conversation with you.

  • Ibrahamav

Danny, I'm suggesting that the tag-team idiots read for themselves. I'm not here to work for them, especially when Eddie keeps changing the question.Seems you lied there – Results 1 – 10 of about 677 for "illegal occupation of the west bank". But here's this tidbit – Results 1 – 10 of about 1,850,000 for there is no illegal occupation of the west bank. (0.21 seconds)

  • Ibrahamav

Here's another for our "16 million" man. Results 1 – 10 of about 2,840,000 for legal occupation of the west bank. (0.20 seconds)Legally occupied? By it's owner, Israel. Go figure. Just like I occupy my home.

  • Wombat

Good one mate,Avoiding the Chomsky argument at all cost. Sore loser.jewish aggression – 2,070,000jewish conspiracy – 3,730,000You see Ibraham, Google is antisemitic too. No wonder an anti semite like you loves to use it.

  • Ibrahamav

Avoiding what? When you lose, you change the question. I'm not playing that game.

  • Wombat

the quesrion was asked at the beginning of the thread. Provide a quote from Chomsky that proives his anti-semitic leanings. You avoided the challenge a dozen times and then spat out some meaningless stats from Google.Run you coward, run.

  • Ibrahamav

Run? Run where? Run to an area where retards attempt to formulate questions prior to reading a post?Whatever you did, eddie did not ask that question at the beggining of the thread. Perhaps you'll reread what he wrote.Perhaps you'll pull your head out of your ass. Who knows? Perhaps the horse will talk.

  • Wombat

So what relevance is it that Eddie didn't ask the quesrion right away? You are just making rediculous excuses to avoid the debate. It's what policians do when they are caught lying. You were the first to post and you make the accusation against Chomsky. Here is the quote: "Please supply the quotes from Chomsky where he states that he hates Jews. If you can't, then you simply prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are a straight up-&-down liar, liar with your pants on fire."What is so difficult abotu provising evidence of your belief that Chomsky is an antisemite?

  • Ibrahamav

Didn't ask the question right away? He didn't ask the question you are asking at all! And the question he asked was answered with another question. Which he failed to answer. If you wish to be a dog who laps up his master's mistakes go for it. But don't bother me with the scraps. You have to go back to his first question, and then the answer he was given. And Chomsky is a well known antisemite.

  • Wombat

Sorry Ibraham, but that pathetic effort doesn't wash. It's useless detbating you. You are not here to contribute to the discussion, but just trolling to waste people's time.I took you for someone who had something worthwhile to say. How foolish of me,C ya.

  • Ibrahamav

What pathetic effort and what debate? You've done nothing but show your ass. The only question you were actually asked was left unanswered.A simple question that required a simple answer. Nothing to do with opinion or subtleties. It was asked when you presented your phony credentials. Are you gone yet? Good.

  • Edward Mariyani-Squi

Hey Ibrahamav, are you still trolling around on the Middle East Open Forum or did they kick you out for being so obnoxious?

  • Davo

We I guess with advertising you expect to hear only the good points of the product placed within the most favourable context possible. However outright false advertising is actually illegal, even though a certain amount of puffery is tolerated by the law.
