Secret Dubai Diary, a blog from the United Arab Emirates, isn’t pleased:
“No matter how well people already know them, UAE labour figures are always startling. There are around one million Asian migrants working as unskilled labourers in the UAE, nearly a quarter of the roughly 4.5 million population.”
Associated Press has more here and includes this encouraging suggestion:
“Company executives will find their names on a sheet of shame published by the government if they don’t start paying wages to their laborers, the Labor Ministry announced Tuesday.
“Many construction workers have taken to the streets here to protest months of lapses in their wages in a country enjoying one of the world’s great building booms.”
This must be the wonder of globalisation espoused by Thomas Friedman
