  • I was recently interviewed by @ajplus for a short film on #disastercapitalism in the #corona age. I discuss price gouging, why this crisis is ripe for exploitation and what it’s exposed about a lack of public investment in services around the world over the last decades. Not mentioned in the video, but on my mind, is the surge in ethno-states, think #Israel, #Hungary, #Poland, #India etc, aiming to capitalize on the catastrophe and using this moment to deepen surveillance and demonization of an unwanted group to allegedly benefit others. That’s one key risk of pandemic, an unnatural state that draconian and racist nations will want to continue indefinitely for ideological and financial gain.   • Fine new book by @tobysmuse on the soaring global cocaine trade. It’s a multi-billion $ industry that causes mass carnage, misery, and highs. The author tells the story of the drug from source plant to consumer and takes big risks in the process. Drug books are often sensationalized but not this work. I’ve started reading and it shows the tragedy of #Colombia’s failed 2016 peace deal that was supposed to bring an end to violence. Instead, the coke trade is booming and activists and farmers are being murdered. Support good journalism and get this book. #coronareading #unpaidplug #journalism
  • Front-page story this week in one of #Australia’s biggest (#Murdoch) papers in the age of #coronavirus. Yes, the country has shut its borders to all international flights for an indefinite period of time. There’s something grimly ironic about this decision, for the conservative government and this newspaper, because both the #Murdoch empire and the current ruling party have spent more than 20 years advocating the harshest line possible against refugees (lock them up in remote gulags, refuse them entry, deny credible claims of torture etc). #welcomebacktoaustralia
  • Just before such public gatherings were banned, @ali_m_martin and I attended the #Sydney book launch at @gleebooks for journalist and old friend @sophie_mcneill1. The book is a powerful look at conflicts in #Syria, #Yemen and #Palestine and other global injustices such as outrages against the #Uighurs. The book asks what responsibility we take for crimes being committed in our name. Far too little is the less than secret answer. I’d argue it’s always been this way but now we know more (and therefore have less excuse to remain silent?) #journalism #abc
  • Recently found this newspaper in my archives, an edition from March 2003, and it’s a useful reminder of the apocalypse that the West unleashed on #Iraq, the Middle East and the world.   • Social gatherings are so vital to stimulate debate and political change and yet today that’s suddenly impossible due to #covid_19. Just a few weeks ago I spoke at the @adelaidefestival in #Australia to massive audiences, the writer’s events are all free and outside, on #Palestine with the wonderful writer @mohammedmassoudmorsi, the global drug war with @chris_j_fleming et al and the shocking state of capitalism with former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis. At this time of global crisis, so many industries are suffering including the arts/publishing sectors.
