The consequences of recent elections

While the the victory of conservative Nicolas Sarkozy in the French elections is being touted as a slap in the face for socialism, the success of the conservatives in the British mid-term elections tell quite a different story.

The success of the Tories was largely attributed to a protest vote against Balir’s Labour government, rather than an endorsement of Cameron. The success of the SNP, Scotland nationalist party, is being linked to the fears in Scotland of a repeat of the nightmare of 18 years under Thatcher’s Tory government. The SNP are running on a platform of Scottish independence, which while less than desirable for Scotland, are preferable to subordination to the Tories.

UPDATE: Sarkozy’s talents as a uniter are already paying dividends.

Riot police fired tear gas into an angry crowd gathered at the Place de la Bastille in Paris following conservative Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential election victory Sunday, one of a handful of incidents reported around France.
