Antony Loewenstein's travels take him to private parties in Iran and Egypt, internet cafes in Saudi Arabia and Damascus, to the homes of Cuban dissidents and into newspaper offices in Beijing, where he discovers the ways in which the internet is threatening the ruld of governments. Through first-hand investigations, he reveals the complicity of Western multinationals in assisting the restriction of information in these countries and how bloggers are leading the charge for change. The blogging revolution is a superb examination about the nature of repression in the twenty-first century and the power of brave individuals to overcome it. It was released in an updated edition in 2011, post the Arab revolutions, and an updated Indian print version in 2011.
The best-selling book on the Israel/Palestine conflict, My Israel Question - on Jewish identity, the Zionist lobby, reporting from Palestine and future Middle East directions - was released by Melbourne University Press in 2006. A new, updated edition was released in 2007 (and reprinted again in 2008). The book was short-listed for the 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Award. Another fully updated, third edition was published in 2009. It was released in all e-book formats in 2011. An updated and translated edition was published in Arabic in 2012.

Jews have a choice over Palestine and silence equals complicity

Roger Cohen has been writing in the New York Times for some time about the responsibility of Jews not to remain silent in the face of Zionist occupation and violence. It’s a rare voice in the American mainstream.

His latest missive, while dismissing boycotts as apparently morphing into anti-Semitism which ignores the failure of the political process to end the occupation, is nonetheless a strong challenge to the Jewish mainstream:

Where then should a Jew in Britain who wants to speak up stand? Not with the Knesset members who have met in Israel with European rightists like Filip Dewinter of Belgium in the grotesque belief that they are Israel’s allies because they hate Muslims. Not with the likes of the Jewish writer Melanie Phillips, whose book “Londonistan” is a reference for the Islamophobes. Nor with those who, ignoring sinister historical echoes, propose ostracizing Israeli academics and embrace an anti-Zionism that flirts with anti-Semitism.

Perhaps a good starting point is a parallel pointed out to me by Maleiha Malik, a professor of law at King’s College London. A century ago, during the Sidney Street siege of 1911, it was the Jews of London’s East End who, cast as Bolsheviks, were said to be “alien extremists.” Winston Churchill, no less, argued in 1920 that Jews were part of a “worldwide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilization and the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development.”

The lesson is clear: Jews, with their history, cannot become the systematic oppressors of another people. They must be vociferous in their insistence that continued colonization of Palestinians in the West Bank will increase Israel’s isolation and ultimately its vulnerability.

    hmmm. Why cant Jews be oppressors Roger? (via Anthony). Yes, I appreciate the implied rhetoric, but I suggest, what is more instructive, is/are jews as marginal groups, were oppressed and tortured like marginal groups have been thru the annals. Was it jews qua jews, or jews as a diapora and marginalised people.Obviously there are significal tropes common to anti-semitism. Is, not creating a monolith and perpetuating a belief that it was jewry for jewness, not their marginalisation like other peoples in history, who got it in the neck, a misconceived starting point.

    Jews can be oppressors, like everyother individual grouping on earth. It may not be a pleasant experience to accept this on a pyschological spectrum, but it is manifest.

    It is not about those in Israel as oppressors. It is the narrative of history, and human impulse. Jews dont oppress. People do, and jews are merely part of the wider tribe. Jews were prominent in the Cheka, but their jewish race was no more relevant than the other individual's Stalin had in his sphere. We kill people, oppress people, torture people, evict people, occupy the other. The relevance of one race (generic, can be any individual race) in this dynamic seeks to perpetuate the divide.

    Cohen's peremptory "Jews cant be oppressors" infers a foreboding. But why? Is anti-semitism such a problem, that it threatens life. Or is the US and its aggression and belligerence a greater problem, its manifest destiny and exceptionalism more threatening, and the classical anti-semitism channeled into the islamophobia of the last decade, and invites to Daniel Pipes to speak in Brisbane, and Thomas Friedman "arabs only understand force" gettinh invited to Sydney Ideas, and with regular spots on Lateline to utter this very American nonsense.

    I think that is the problem, the human impulse to conquer and leaning to racism to anyone denoted as "other". As Pinter took offense with, the "full spectrum dominance" of PNAC and her Washington ilk.
